New North partners with national leaders for broadband access study
NEW NORTH, INC

NEW NORTH – New North Inc., the regional economic development corporation serving Northeast Wisconsin, has partnered with a nationally recognized broadband planning firm, along with one of the largest engineering firms in the state, to execute a fast-track broadband internet gap analysis for the 18 counties in the region. The work is funded by a $500,000 EDA CARES Act Recovery Assistance grant, announced this past May, and $125,000 in matching local funds.

Top broadband planner Design Nine will oversee the project and will be joined by Midwest-based consulting firms MSA Professional Services and GEO Partners, LLC. The scope of their collaborative work will include asset evaluation, gap analysis and data collection, ownership and governance, business and financial planning, affordable technical designs, and recommendations on next steps...

TDS Telecom launches fiber network to first addresses in Fox Cities, opens Menasha storefront

KIMBERLY – Area residents have a new option for high-speed internet, TV and phone services.

TDS Telecom, which is based in Madison, announced last week the launch of its fiber-to-the-home network to addresses in the Fox Cities. TDS service is now available to nearly 1,000 homes and businesses in Kimberly, according to a press release, and that service will soon expand to other Fox Cities communities...

Voting begins on 'Coolest Thing' contest

Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce and Johnson Financial Group have kicked off the first round of voting for the Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin. This year, 150 nominees will compete in a popular vote from Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 8 a.m. to Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 5 p.m.

Wisconsinites can cast their vote once per day per device at madeinwis.com.

WMC and Johnson Financial Group have partnered for this contest since 2016, and Wisconsinites have cast over 775,000 votes since its inception. Last year alone, over 125,000 votes were cast to determine the Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin...

Wisconsin iron foundry pays workers to learn English, improving workers' lives

CEDAR GROVE - For years, Willman Industries president Todd Willman thought about offering English classes at his family's Sheboygan County foundry but was nervous it might offend his employees.

Finally, he started asking workers if it was something they would be interested in, and the response was positive. "One person said, ‘Yes, how soon can I sign up?’" Willman recalled.

Willman Industries is a cast iron foundry located in Cedar Grove, a small village less than 20 miles southwest of Sheboygan. The foundry makes parts for companies such as Caterpillar and John Deere....

Appleton passes resolution to welcome Afghan refugees

APPLETON - It’s still unclear when the first of an expected 100 Afghanistan refugees will arrive in the Fox Valley.

On Wednesday night, the Appleton City Council passed a resolution to expediate any help they might need in finding housing and other services.

World Relief Fox Valley Director Tami McLaughlin says right now, they’re still awaiting word on when the first group might arrive.

“We do not have a clue. We wish we did. When we find out we will certainly start preparing and gathering all of the partners together and saying it’s okay, time to mobilize but right now we are just in preparation mode and waiting patiently or as patiently as we can,” she said...

UPDATE: The Fond du Lac County Health Department and Accelerated Clinical Laboratories’ testing opportunity will be delayed by one week. The testing site will begin on Tuesday September 21st.
