'We farm the sun': For some Wisconsin dairy farmers, solar energy is a new source of income
WISCONSIN PUBLIC RADIO   

Brent Sinkula has been operating the Irish Acres dairy farm for 12 years. Before that, it was his father's farm, and his home.

"Since I was 5 years old, I was out there feeding calves and helping out," Sinkula said.

As president of the Manitowoc County Farm Bureau, Sinkula understands the challenges Wisconsin dairies are facing. The changing dairy market has made it more difficult for small and mid-sized farms to continue.

Small dairy farms with fewer than 200 cows can survive, Sinkula said, because a single family can run them without the expense of hiring outside labor. And large farms, those with more than 1,000 cows, can afford to hire help because their size means more profit....

NEENAH - Kimberly-Clark Corp. has installed 414 solar panels on the roof of its Experimental Mill, or X-Mill, at 126 N. Commercial St.

It's the first rooftop solar system in the downtown Neenah business district.

The system will generate 195 megawatt hours of renewable electricity annually, the company said.

That's sufficient to power the X-Mill's lighting, which accounts for 4% of the mill's total electrical consumption. It also equates to the annual electrical consumption of 26 homes...

The program will offer an employee training program designed to increase the quality and quantity of skilled technicians equipped to advance the maritime manufacturing industry of Northeast Wisconsin.

More than a decade and a new 120,000-square-foot Resch Expo later, the Green Bay area gets another crack this weekend at hosting the Great Lakes Logging and Heavy Equipment Expo and its more than 300 vendors.

State program looks to employ women and minorities with criminal offenses

GREEN BAY – The Northeast Forward Service Trans program hosted its first “Redemption Summit.” The goal of the summit is to provide women and minorities with criminal offenses access to job opportunities in the construction industry.

“For folks with criminal backgrounds, there are opportunities in the construction industry like no other,” explained the Forward Service Corporation Trans Coordinator, Ranard Morris.

Participants undergo an intensive 120-hour program to prepare them for work. Trans coordinator Ranard Morris says those involved obtain skills that will benefit them when competing for jobs....
