New initiative aims at helping underrepresented populations obtain digital literacy skills
THE BUSINESS NEWS

NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – Digital literacy is defined as having the skills needed to live, learn and work in a society where communication and access to information is increasingly done through digital technologies.

The NEW BOOST (Building Opportunities for Overlooked Sustainable Talent) Hidden Talent Project initiative, spearheaded by New North, is designed to help underrepresented populations obtain digital literacy skills that in turn assist them with entry/reentry into the workforce or improving their current employment situation.

“What we see is, as we continue to hear more organizations talking about their workforce needs, we see this as being very sustainable,” Rebecca Deschane, New North vice president of talent development, said. “It's creating those opportunities for organizations to connect with people, and for those people to fill the workforce gaps that are necessary in order to be able to meet the demands.”..

MADISON—Gov. Tony Evers this week announced that Wisconsin high school juniors and seniors heading back to school this fall will have 14 new occupational pathways that local employers can support, thanks to ongoing modernization efforts by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD).

“We have to make sure our kids have apprenticeship opportunities and different pathways to get the jobs and skills training they need to join our state’s workforce,” said Gov. Evers. “These latest youth apprenticeship pathways will help strengthen the connections among employers, educators, students, and communities, provide new opportunities for our young people to build their futures, and foster our own home-grown talent in critical industries that support local economies across our state.”..

RIPON -- Football season is here. Do you know where your jersey was made?

Whether you’re in youth sports or a world-class pro, there’s a good chance your uniform came from Berlin, Wis., where family-owned Ripon Athletic has operated since 1987.

In 1992, the jacket and uniform maker acquired the manufacturing operations of Sand Knit — John Sand’s original “designer to the pros” since 1921. Today the company stands as a tribute to Green Lake County’s storied tradition of athletics apparel manufacturing, continuing to produce Ripon Athletic, Ripon Jacket and Sand Knit products in the community of 5,500 residents and proudly celebrating Sand Knit’s 100th anniversary last year...

DC Farm for Vets helps veterans with training and produce sales in Door County
WLUK

DOOR COUNTY -- For some area veterans, finding a place to cope with wartime experiences can be a challenge -- but in Door County, a group is using produce as a way to grow more than just vegetables.

Army veteran and DC Farm for Vets founder Jacob VandenPlas says he feels right at home at the 40-acre plot of land northeast of Forestville.

"I fell in love with farming when we bought the farm here and got things kicked off," he said. "And it helped me. It was very therapeutic. Getting your hands in the dirt and being able to watch something grow from seed to your dinner table, was very rewarding."...

14 of Wisconsin's best supper clubs, according to readers (six in the New North)
MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL

It’s a Friday night in Wisconsin, and you’re trying to decide where to go for dinner. Dad wants prime rib. Mom wants walleye. Everyone wants an old fashioned.

Where do you go? A supper club, of course.

The exact definition of a supper club is a little like that of where “up north” begins — it’s different for everyone. But there are commonalities: A family-run joint that serves hearty portions of seafood and steak proceeded by a relish tray, soup or salad and fresh-baked bread. Beverage options include old fashioneds (brandy sweet, of course) and ice cream drinks. The décor is usually a cross between a fine-dining restaurant and a Northwoods cabin, with a sprinkling of a 1940s cocktail lounge. Half of them might be haunted. All are about the experience as much as the food...
