Registration open for ‘Broadband – The New Economic Necessity’ on Aug. 23 
NEW NORTH, INC.

NEW NORTH – Leaders from across the New North region will be convening the morning of August 23 at the D.J. Bordini Center in Appleton to discuss next steps in broadband strategy for Northeast Wisconsin. Free of charge, participation in ’Broadband – The New Economic Necessity’ is available both in-person and virtually.

The event is targeted towards economic-development and elected officials, community leaders, internet service providers, business organizations and citizens from the New North who have an interest in strategies aimed at improvement of broadband internet through new infrastructure and related funding.

Ashwaubenon celebrates its sesquicentennial this year with the only way you can mark a milestone as big as 150 years — with a weeklong party.

Here are 10 highlights of festivities that begin today and run through Sunday, and because nostalgia is fun, a look back at 10 highlights from how the village marked its centennial in 1972.

Opening ceremonies: 4:30-8:30 p.m. today at Goelz Field at Ashwaubenon High School. Lumberjack Band, Oneida Nation Dancers, flag ceremony and ice cream. Sesquicentennial T-shirts and pins available for purchase....

Harbor Freight Tools plans new Fond du Lac location near Johnson Street, Pioneer Road construction

FOND DU LAC – As construction continues to refurbish Johnson Street and Pioneer Road, a new power tool company will soon move into the area.

Harbor Freight Tools eyed the former Best Buy, 335 N. Pioneer Road, for a Fond du Lac location, anticipated to open this fall, according to Harbor Freight's website.

The store sells hand and power tools for professionals and hobbyists alike, featuring brands such as Pittsburgh, Bauer and Hercules.

In addition to its variety, Harbor Freight is also known for its coupons and the company's emphasis on keeping prices at up to 80% less than competitors, according to its website....

Ukrainian refugees land in Green Bay

GREEN BAY – When Green Bay resident Oleg Yakovenko’s family from Ukraine needed a place of refuge after the Russian invasion of their country, he stepped up without hesitation.

Adding seven people into Yakovenko’s home meant making many accommodations like giving up his office, and two of his daughter’s bedrooms to fit everyone.

Yakovenko says, “They had no choice [moving here]. We just wanted to help them out, welcome them here, provide a living at our house, and anything they need until they get their own place and they get jobs.”..

Oneida Nation collaborates with UW-Green Bay to bring Reservation Dogs actors' hip-hop show to Weidner Center

GREEN BAY - In their first major collaboration with the Oneida Nation organizers with the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts are bringing Indigenous hip-hop stars to Green Bay for upcoming shows.

The partnership is bringing the hip-hop little people duo Lil’ Mike and Funny Bone to the Weidner on the UW-Green Bay campus on Sept. 7. The performing pair stars in the hit Hulu TV show “Reservation Dogs.”

“We hope that this is only the beginning of a deeper partnership between The Weidner and Oneida Nation Arts Program (ONAP),” said Kelli Strickland, executive director of the Weidner Center and ONAP chairperson. “That is the ideal community partnership, where programming is not happening in a silo, but rather a true collaboration.”.

OSHKOSH – Otherworldly, diamond-shaped sculptures, illuminated by a warm gold light within, float along a garden path among the trees, which are also basked in a cool blue. Tiny colorful lights dot the leaves.

"The Nature of Light: An Exploration After Dark" is worth staying up late for. The new, immersive experience on display at The Paine Art Center and Gardens, 1410 Algoma Blvd., is best viewed at or after sunset.

The Paine's executive director Aaron Sherer said it is the largest exhibit the arts center has done, encompassing the entirety of its outdoor grounds and the first floor of the mansion...

Fox Cities Chamber welcomes new VP of Government Affairs

The Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce announced that Jon Turke has joined the organization as Vice President of Government Affairs.

In his role he will coordinate government affairs activities of the Chamber at the local, state and federal level. He will serve as an advocate for businesses in the Fox Valley and also manage the Chamber’s public policy council.

Jon brings extensive advocacy experience to businesses in the Fox Cities region, including work as Chief of Staff to the Majority Leader in the Wisconsin State Assembly and Director of Government Relations for a statewide financial services trade association. gener8tor Skills Accelerator, a free skills training program for under/unemployed individuals, in partnership with Microsoft, the NEW North and the Bay Area Workforce Development Board, is launching a cohort for residents of Northeast Wisconsin to improve their skills in IT Help Desk.

Participants build their confidence alongside their technical knowledge in small cohort-based groups where they receive one-on-one support from career coaches to achieve their goals.

The program utilizes the LinkedIn Learning platform to provide high-quality instruction in fields ranging from Customer Service to Software Development. Participants earn LinkedIn Learning certificates and, in certain programs, have access to reduced fee exams to secure industry-recognized certifications. Program participants will be invited to learn alongside other participants and gain valuable new skill sets for the digital economy. All learning is self-paced to fit any schedule....
