Connector: 15 years in, NEWMA remains 'laser-focused' on talent
Insight Publications

NORTHEAST WISCONSIN -- Ann Franz is fond of aphorisms and has many to describe the NEW Manufacturing Alliance and her role leading it: “We always talk about this being the field of dreams and if you build it they will come, but you also have to mow the grass.” Or: “I always say, I’m a nobody, but I know a lot of somebodies, and by bringing all these people together, there’s so much opportunity for them to work together.”

Anyone who knows Franz, who has led NEWMA since its inception 15 years ago, would dispute that she’s a nobody, but the alliance’s role in bringing together manufacturers and other stakeholders to address the issue of talent is indisputable....

Opening the door: Navigators facilitate apprentice-employer connections
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

WISCONSIN -- Working in the field with Wisconsin’s apprenticeship program, Joshua Johnson witnessed some of the headaches prospective apprentices encountered. The biggest challenge is would-be apprentices needing to find an employer to work with on their own.

Now, as director of the Wisconsin Apprenticeship System, Johnson requested to use funds from a U.S. Department of Labor Apprenticeship Expansion grant to help prospective apprentices, who earn money while learning a new skill, whether it’s in construction or information technology.

“Our prime customer is the employer and that’s where the focus has been, and I decided we really needed to do something to help people navigate the whole process,” he says.....

Closer to home: Reshoring gains traction as supply chain woes continue
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

UNITED STATES -- Though the pandemic has disrupted the global supply chain for more than a year, one event — the dayslong blockage of the Suez Canal in Egypt in March — provided a visceral visual reminder of the fragility of supply chains.

The 1,312-foot, 20,000-container-capacity cargo ship named Ever Given ran aground March 23 and remained lodged for six days, blocking maritime traffic at one of the world’s busiest waterways.

Mike Schlagenhaufer, manufacturing consultant for Acuity Insurance, says the incident affected the United States to a lesser extent because the vessel contained imports headed for Europe. It did, however, create ripples of impact through blocking cargo capacity at a time when the price of cargo space was already high....

Employee investment: AriensCo program offers worker education opportunities
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

BRILLION -- From hefty hiring bonuses to billboards to ubiquitous “now hiring” signs, employers are trying everything to attract — and retain — talent.

Beyond traditional strategies, leaders at AriensCo have challenged themselves to get creative on the recruitment and retention front. The latter is equally, if not more, important than the former.

“This has really been quite a challenge for us. Once we get our candidates on board, we have to continue to find ways to manage that talent,” says Tracy Tuschel, senior manager of human resources for AriensCo, which also offers a $2,000 signing bonus to new hires

In addition to providing that financial incentive, the company wanted to invest in its employees’ futures. The manufacturing world is changing quickly, and AriensCo recognized the need for programs to help develop internal talent. That desire, along with the business’s dedication to fostering intellectual curiosity, led to the creation of a continuing education program specific to its own employees....
