How a passion for art led a Sheboygan County woman from teaching to Homeschool Art Box, an e-commerce business (Add New North Regional Pitch Finalist)
GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE

SHEBOYGAN -- In the midst of the pandemic, homeschooling skyrocketed. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the proportion of American families home-schooling at least one child grew from 5.4% in spring 2020 to 11.1% in fall 2021.

As those trends establish homeschooling as an option for many families, Sarah Harmeling of Waldo, a small community in Sheboygan County, is ideally positioned to capitalize on her niche business, Homeschool Art Box. Harmeling, a finalist in the NEW Launch Alliance Pitch Contest, founded the business in June 2019...

Small Door County company wins bronze medal at World-Wide Mustard Competition
NBC 26

STURGEON BAY — While living on an old farm back in 1994, Rita Hunt remembers getting venison sausage from her friends. And she wanted to add some extra flavor.

"I started making little batches of mustard," she said. "My sister gave me the recipe and made little batches of mustard."

Shortly after that, she and her husband Dave turned their version of the condiment into a business.

"From six pints on the stove to 50 gallons," he said...

ELLISON BAY — Uncle Tom's Candy Store has never passed up an opportunity to recognize the sacrifices or service that military personnel and first responders provide daily.

Tom Collis, the original owner of Uncle Tom's, was a staunch advocate for military personnel and first responders. The candy store walls and rafters are filled with badges and tributes that symbolize Uncle Tom's created phrase "gratitude is attitude"....

It's tough to beat Gessert's Ice Cream and Confectionary for an old-fashioned ice cream parlor experience
SHEBOYGAN PRESS

ELKHART LAKE - Order a single cone at Gessert's Ice Cream and Confectionery and you get two scoops of Cedar Crest Ice Cream. Three scoops in a double cone.

Extra licks lengthen the leisurely summer indulgence of enjoying an ice cream. At Gessert's, that's a chance to chat with family and friends while seated in a 1920s era wooden booth. Or look at black and white photos of Gessert's dating back to its opening in 1922. Big band and jazz music playing in the background provides the cherry on top of this old-fashioned ice cream parlor experience...

Adding a little 'Wisconsin flair': Chainsaw artist transforms dead trees into carvings at Road America
SHEBOYGAN PRESS

ELKHART LAKE - When visitors go to state and national parks across the United States, they may have the chance to see wildlife, like bears, bison and moose. But what visitors to America’s “national park of speed” may not know is they can also expect to see their share of animals when they visit Road America. Here, carved from trees.

Ben Buschke, chainsaw artist and owner of Buschke Carving in Manawa in Waupaca County, has made six tree carvings on the Road America grounds, featuring animals like bears, owls and an eagle.

The idea to bring tree carving to the 640-acre grounds started when Road America had to cut down some of its trees...

From boots to beans: Veteran-owned shop makes coffee roasting an art
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

SEYMOUR -- Mike Sugden used to pull up his Army boots. But in 2019, the 23-year veteran of the U.S. Army and Army Reserves bootstrapped his way to owning his own business: JSA Coffee Roasting in Seymour.

“When we first started, we had no idea what to expect,” says Sugden, who owns the business with his wife, Nanci.

Sugden retired from the military in 2013 and soon after was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Not certain he could work a typical job, he and Nanci started roasting coffee beans at home in a cast-iron skillet and then a Whirley Pop popcorn maker, then on a grill with a drum and a motor...
