Fincantieri Marinette Marine launches last Freedom-class littoral combat ship

MARINETTE (WLUK) --The end of an era Saturday, at Fincantieri Marinette Marine.

The final littoral combat ship built at the shipyard was launched and christened. It was the last planned side-launch of a ship at the marine. 

The future USS Cleveland (LCS 31), a Freedom-variant littoral combat ship, is the 16th and final Freedom-variant LCS. Robyn Modly, wife of former Acting Secretary of the Navy and Cleveland native, Thomas Modly, christened the ship.

Designing a dream: Burger Boat Company's record-setting commission

MANITOWOC — Burger Boat Company in Manitowoc is making its largest commissions yet: two 180-foot motor yachts.

“The owner came to us with a design brief, and what you see is basically that design brief come to life," said Ron Cleveringa, vice president of sales and marketing at the company.

Cleveringa's been in the business for 39 years, and Burger Boat Company has been around for over four times longer — operating since 1863.

Sheboygan City Plan Commission approves Berkshire Riverfront housing development
SHEBOYGAN SUN

SHEBOYGAN – A major housing development is closer to becoming a reality after the Sheboygan City Plan Commission approved a conditional use permit by General Capital Group to build the $30 million Berkshire Sheboygan Riverfront apartments and townhomes. The approval came at the Plan Commission’s meeting at City Hall on Tuesday, April 11.

The development, which will cover 1.9 acres at the former J.J. Koepsell property on Indiana Avenue between South 9th and South 10th Streets, consists of 83 units of affordable senior housing units and 18 separate live-work units with no age restriction. There will also be a satellite office for the Family Service Association of Sheboygan on site.

Master's degree partnership to aid in Northeast Wisconsin teacher shortage

GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- Local education departments are making new efforts to fill Wisconsin's severe teacher shortage; an advanced Master's degree program is bridging the gap.

"You can start your career in one spot, and you can continue to grow as a professional into other spots, including classroom teacher," said Mike Friis, the Green Bay school district's executive director of human resources.

The district and the UW-Green Bay have partnered to launch a new innovative program to help enable the district's hourly paraprofessional employees to become teachers.

Three from New North graduate as Master Cheesemakers
INSIGHT ON BUSINESS 

Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin Center for Dairy Research have announced the 2023 graduating class of Wisconsin Master Cheesemakers.

Collectively, the class earned certifications in cheddar, blue cheese, mozzarella, and curds.

The graduates include Kirk Auchue of Saputo Cheese in Black Creek and Fond du Lac, Timothy Stearns of Land O’Lakes in Kiel, Tony Hook of Hook’s Cheese in Mineral Point, Ben Shibler of Pagel’s Ponderosa/Ron’s Wisconsin Cheese in Kewaunee, and returner Ryan LaGrander of LaGrander’s Hillside Dairy in Stanley.

What do you do if you need important medications and all of the pharmacies are closed? Door County Medical Center has an answer. For the last month, patients have been able to head to the emergency room lounge and use the InstyMeds vending machine to get antibiotics, analgesics, and steroids after visits to the hospital. DCMC Clinical Pharmacist Bradley Hobart says that the machines are more popular in rural areas, where the likelihood of a 24-hour pharmacy is low....

An all-abilities gym opened in Buchanan, catering to kids and adults with disabilities

BUCHANAN – At the beginning of February, a new gym with a unique mission opened its doors.

Innovative Growth LLC, W3165 Van Roy Road, is an all-abilities gym that specializes in working with children and adults with disabilities. Brooke Riehl, an exercise physiologist and autism exercise specialist, founded the gym.

"I've had lots of experience in the special needs world, and the exercise world," Riehl said. "I've always been looking for a job or an activity that combined both, and I couldn't find that. So, I just thought, well, I will do it."...
