Dad's lessons live on at Appleton's Jacobs Meat Market
Green Bay Press Gazette
Luke Jacobs, the third-generation owner of Jacobs Meat Market in Appleton, says that not finishing college turned out to be one of the best things that could have happened to him.

He recalled: “At age 10, I remember my mother saying, ‘You don’t want to take over the store. It takes a lot of time and you won’t make much money.’ Fast forward, I wasn’t the best student in college and failed out. I sent a letter to my dad and said I would like to come back to the store and hoped there was a spot for me...

With up to 250,000 active-duty service members transitioning each year to civilian life, the talent pool of skilled and dedicated workers is great. To capture some of that potential, New North, Inc. partnered with the organization Mission Wisconsin to help connect veterans with jobs at companies in Northeast Wisconsin’s 18-county region.

“If you ask employers, one of their single-biggest concerns is ‘How do I find more talent? Where does this skill come from?’” says Steve Janke, founder of Mission Wisconsin and a former U.S. Marine.

Mission Wisconsin, which started as a state program and is now a private firm, helps military families successfully transition to civilian life through one-on-one coaching and talent pipeline-building services for small- to medium-sized companies...

Dr. May joined FVTC in 1983 and has taken on a variety of roles with increasing responsibilities throughout her tenure. She became chief academic officer in 1997 and was named president and CEO of the College in 2008.

“Together, we have navigated three of the greatest challenges in the College’s history,” Dr. May said in a message to faculty and staff. “First, the enormous impact of the Great Recession that began three months into my presidency in 2008, then the enactment of Act 10 state legislation in 2011, and capped off with the unprecedented pandemic of 2020. Bringing the bubbles
Insight Publications
Soda Sense President Mike Nelson didn’t know just how popular sparkling water would become when one of his business partners, Brandon Lotto, approached him with an idea a few years ago.

Lotto was a big user of home carbonation machines but always had a hard time getting replacement canisters from stores. Searching for a solution, he turned to Nelson, who had spent his career in the mechanical industry, to see if he knew of a way to refill the canisters.

After some trial and error, the two eventually landed on the concept of centralized filling of canisters that ship to people’s homes. The process is simple and requires people to visit the Soda Sense website just once to sign up for the membership exchange. After that, they receive two canisters in the mail, which they then send back for replacements when they’re empty...
