Paving an entrepreneurial path forward: De Pere entrepreneur looks to relaunch startup nearly a year after losing her home, business supplies in a fire
THE BUSINESS NEWS

DE PERE -- Last May, De Pere entrepreneur Kelly Schwartz said she was riding a high with her startup business – Fridge Jerky.

Receiving great feedback from the community, making her way through Blueprint Green Bay – a 12-week startup accelerator program through the Greater Green Bay Chamber – and presenting Fridge Jerky to a room full of fellow entrepreneurs, community members and potential investors – Schwartz said everything seemed to be falling into place for her and her startup venture.

Unfortunately, that high didn’t last long...

Appleton entrepreneur becomes angel investor
INSIGHT ON BUSINESS

APPLETON -- When Ruben Contreras started Action Painting and Carpet Care in Appleton in 2006, he struggled to come up with $500 to buy a pressure washer.

That memory led to his recent investment in another start up business with a similar origin story.

Like many business startups, Contreras found it hard to come up with capital from traditional sources like a bank loan and even some personal acquaintances were reluctant to risk investing in his dream. While he knew painting, Contreras says he was less prepared to answer questions about a business plan...

“I wanted to own and operate my own Culver’s,” he said. “Growing up in Portage, I started working at Culver’s when I was 14. At that time, it was simply a part-time high school job, but I liked it.”

A few years later, Clemmons bought his first Culver’s slightly north of Green Bay in the Village of Suamico...

Blending passions -- architecture, environment, holistic products: Neenah couple brings fresh spring look, dedication to downtown business
THE BUSINESS NEWS

NEENAH -- Some may call it a second career – Amy and Adam James – the new owners of The Natural Boutique in Neenah – said it's a vision come to life.

The couple – whose architecture firm is two doors down from the boutique’s 125 W. Wisconsin Ave. location – said they had been loyal customers for many years, and when the former owner decided to retire, they made the decision to pivot into small business ownership and purchase the store.

“The previous owner had been operating the business for 19 years, and it seemed like with new ownership it was time to refresh some things,” Adam said. “We have an urban flower farm and wanted to bring in some of our fresh herbs and dried goods, which needed its own stage.”

A place for people to gather, socialize, relax: After, A Social Club, opened its doors in De Pere earlier this month
THE BUSINESS NEWS

DE PERE -- If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again – Chad Nehring said those words definitely ring true for him and his brother Jamie Cravillion, owners of After: A Social Club, which opened March 10 in De Pere.

“We previously attempted a restaurant and lounge in the space in addition to running the ComedyCity venue,” Nehring, who also co-owns ComedyCity, (located next door to the new social club), said. “Honestly, while we had great staff and customers, we weren’t all that unique.”

Nehring said prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, they were probably better comedians than restaurateurs...
