Living in Wisconsin: 'Hmong people are truly American, if not more American, than most Americans'
APPLETON POST-CRESCENT

Sheng Lee Riechers remembers attending Neenah school and community events where military veterans were asked to stand and be recognized for their service to the country.

Her father, a Hmong soldier who fought communist forces under the direction of the U.S. government during the Vietnam War, would always hesitate to stand, unsure of how he would be received.

"I was like, 'Dad, get up. You fought in the war,'" Riechers recalled. "It was always really awkward for him. I wish more people understood the history of why Hmong people are here and that Hmong people are truly American, if not more American than most Americans. They fought for the country, and they fought for freedom."...

Value of building permits in Oconto jumped 73% last year; homeowners invest in renovations
GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE

OCONTO – The total value of construction and building improvements in the city of Oconto in 2021 — from new siding to new houses — soared 73% from the previous year, according to city records.

The value of the projects last year was $7.74 million, up from $4.48 million in 2020, says the Building Inspection Department’s 2021 annual report.

Though the actual number of permits declined slightly year-over-year by eight, to 470, they’re up significantly from the 392 issued in 2018 and 412 the following year.

“Our building permits have been going through the roof for the last few years,” said Mayor Lloyd Heier...

Netting a win: Carron Net Co. defies long-term odds for family business
INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

It is commonly said that few family-owned businesses make it to the third generation. In Two Rivers, one historic company is proving that old adage wrong. With Carron Net Co.’s 90th anniversary on the horizon, fourth-generation owner Bill Kiel Jr. says the small manufacturer is stronger than ever. The netting company is seeing unprecedented growth and, in the last six years, has doubled its sales.

“Ours is one of the little American success stories,” he says. “My family members who came before me were resilient and adaptable, and all took a longer view for the company and the people who live in Two Rivers. Carron has provided a life for our family and given many families the opportunity to make a good living.”...

Meeting a need: Main Oriental Market specializes in imported Asian products

INSIGHT PUBLICATIONS

When Kao Shoua Yang moved to the United States as a refugee from the Vietnam War, she knew what it was like to go without. Yang, a teenager at the time, and her family had little and were lucky to have one hot meal each day.

Yang’s experience motivated her to open a business selling the staple Asian foods people typically couldn’t afford to buy from a traditional store. In 2005, she started Main Oriental Market in 1,500 square feet of strip mall space in downtown Green Bay.

In 2011, CVS purchased the space the market was renting. Yang and her husband, Bruce — also a Vietnam War refugee — searched for another location in which to continue their business but couldn’t find the right one, leading to a two-year closure...
