Maple tapping season, started by Indigenous people, arrives in Wisconsin
GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE

Boozhoo ("hello" in Ojibwe) and miigwech ("thank you") for reading the First Nations Wisconsin newsletter.

Maple tree tapping season is around the corner and I wanted to revisit some articles showing the importance of this “medicine” to Indigenous cultures in Wisconsin.

An Oneida legend tells that the finished syrup used to flow freely from the maple tree, but as the people lacked appreciation for the gift the Creator made, the big winds arrived and turned the syrup into water.

Artley Skenandore, principal of the Oneida Nation High School, said people can still have wáhta̲’ óshes (maple syrup) if they work for it.

He recently led students out to the maple trees on campus to show how much work is needed to tap a tree to slowly collect the sap...

4imprint to Build Solar Array, Distribution Center to Be Powered by Renewable Energy

4IMPRINT

OSHKOSH -- Oshkosh-based promotional products retailer 4imprint plans to build a solar array at its Distribution Center, 2875 Atlas Avenue, Oshkosh. When complete, the 2,600-panel solar array is expected to generate one-megawatt of electricity and significantly increase the portion of the company’s energy requirements generated by renewable sources.

The solar collection system will further utilize their existing property located to the west of their Distribution Center. Planning for the project began in 2019. When complete, it is expected to generate more than 40% of the current requirements to power the 4imprint Distribution Center, and any excess electricity collected will be fed into the local power grid.

“This project allows us to dramatically increase the proportion of the business we power with renewable energy,” said Kevin Lyons-Tarr, CEO, 4imprint...

Washington Island Middle School taking part in national STEM contest
WFRV

WASHINGTON ISLAND -- Students at a Door County school are the Wisconsin State Winners in a very unique contest.

Students from the 8th-grade class at Washington Island Middle School and teacher Tim Verboomen won $6,500 from Samsung through the ‘Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest’ that encourages students to solve a real-world problem using STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

They are designing 3D-printed traps to capture the aggressive and invasive fish, the Round Goby in Lake Michigan. The Round Goby was spread to all the Great Lakes in 1994 and can remove native fish and take over the habitat. Through their research, students talked to several researchers, teachers, and a game warden with the State of Wisconsin to come up with the best solution. They decided they would trap the Round Goby by using a program called SketchUp to make 3D traps that would hold a speaker playing the sounds a male goby would make to attract the females. Students said that by placing the traps in rocky shallow water, they could trap the fish...

Hinterland brews another round of Black is Beautiful imperial stout, this time to support a brewing program for women and people of color
GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE

GREEN BAY -- Hinterland brewed another batch of Black is Beautiful, but this time cans of the imperial stout shipped to Walmart stores with 10% of profits being donated to a brewing program for women and people of color.

Started in 2020 by Marcus Baskerville, head brewer and co-owner of Texas-based Weathered Souls Brewing Co., Black is Beautiful was born in an attempt to bring awareness to the injustices that many people of color face daily.

Hinterland first released a Black Is Beautiful stout in August 2020 with sales proceeds donated to We All Rise African American Resource Center.

"We felt it was a great opportunity to give back to the community," said Hinterland owner Bill Tressler.

Walmart approached Hinterland to brew the beer but this time to raise funds for the Harriet Baskerville Incubation Program. Named after Baskerville’s grandmother who was a Prohibition-era brewing pioneer, the program provides brewing education, guest seminars and more for people of color and women — who are traditionally underrepresented in the brewing industry...
