Alliant developing battery energy storage system for Sheboygan
SHEBOYGAN SUN

MADISON – Alliant Energy has announced it will be developing a battery energy storage system that will be located on a seven-acre lot adjacent to Sheboygan’s Edgewater Generating Station.

Pending approval by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin, the 99-megawatt battery system will have enough storage capacity to power over 100,000 homes for four hours. Alliant plans to begin construction in 2024, and the new system is expected to be in service shortly after Edgewater is retired in 2025.

Students can 'feel safe and welcome': Yelonda Harvey to open Kumon Math and Reading Center in Howard
GREEN BAY PRESS GAZETTE

With the National Assessment of Education Progress reporting that 2022 saw the strongest declines in math and reading ever recorded, Yelonda Harvey’s timing could hardly be better. Harvey, who has more than 15 years of teaching experience, is poised to help with a new business.

“The franchise, Kumon Math and Reading Center, was on our radar sometime ago," she said. "I was getting older and had the itch to start my own business. I had a home daycare center years ago when I lived in Virginia, and always knew that eventually I would own a business. I love teaching, so to combine this was a match made in heaven.”...

HOWARD – Benson Designs in Howard is offering blacksmithing classes for beginners. Jeff Benson has been teaching the fundamentals of blacksmithing since the early 2000s.

He says, “I came from woodworking, which I still really love, but blacksmithing is entirely different. Instead of adding or subtracting material, I’m taking a volume of material, heating it up, and changing the shape.”

$10 million in mental health funding supports farmers
WBAY

ELDORADO -- The Clark family milks 150 cows, twice a day, and manage more than a thousand acres.

“Because everyday is different, there’s a lot of challenges that come at us. And that can be overwhelming for some people,” Janet Clark, owner of Vision Aire Farms explained.

Clark said farmers are resilient, but deal with some unique stressors.

“Finances are always changing,” Clark said. “You are never guaranteed to have what your milk price is. It’s a commodity so it’s going to fluctuate. What are our input costs from year to year? That’s always changing and that can wear on people’s mental health.”..

Report: Wisconsin colleges and universities see smaller enrollment declines than neighboring states
WISCONSIN PUBLIC RADIO

Enrollment across Wisconsin's public and private colleges fell slightly last fall, with larger declines reported in all neighboring states, according to new national data. A deeper look at Wisconsin numbers show notable gains at the state's technical colleges and sizable drops across private universities.

Survey data from Wisconsin colleges published by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center show statewide enrollment dropped by around 0.5 percent, or 1,118 students, during the fall semester. The year-over-year decline was far less notable than it was during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, when enrollment fell by around 10,000 students or 3.3 percent between fall 2019 and fall 2020...
