Clean switch: Bluestem Hand Sanitizer fills pandemic need
Insight On Business
“We’re building a network of planners, photographers and venues in the wedding industry

in preparation for next year, when this backlog of weddings are going to be taking place,” he says.

Jim Waterman never thought he’d pin his career hopes on hand sanitizer.

In his real life, he’s a scientist in the fuel ethanol industry and that was more than enough. Then in April, a friend suggested a crazy idea and Waterman ran with it.

That’s how Bluestem Hand Sanitizer got its start. The Appleton-made hand sanitizer is sold online in a variety of package sizes, and....

Signs of the times: Fox Cities Sign thriving in pandemic under leadership of budding entrepreneur Sara Greil
Insight On Business
“Learn as you go” has likely been a mantra for many budding entrepreneurs. For Sara Greil, owner of Fox Cities Sign in Menasha, that’s exactly what happened.

With a degree in fine arts and graphic design, the 36-year-old Brillion native never planned on owning her own business. But after working for 13 years at the business that launched in 2006, Greil became owner in early 2020, leading the company to win a Small Business of the Year Award from the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s pretty amazing,” Greil says. “I remember sitting at the awards ceremony thinking, that’s a huge accomplishment, that’s my goal.”

Greil worked both as a graphic designer and salesperson at Fox Cities Sign during her tenure when she eventually began running more of the....

Get to know: Local entrepreneur Andrew Schmitz
Insight On Business
Andrew Schmitz developed Proceed.app out of necessity.

The Appleton man was working a day job elsewhere and creating videos on the side for businesses seeking employee training programs when one freelance project left him in a time crunch. Schmitz decided to ask the organization and its employees to send him information, whether photos or text, allowing him to put the video together.

The final product was so successful Schmitz decided to develop it further, launching Proceed.app in 2019. The platform crowdsources, manages and distributes learning materials for small- and medium-sized businesses using visual elements, as opposed to text-based knowledge materials. Schmitz says people retain knowledge at higher rates through visual learning.

Proceed.app won the New North’s first-ever HATCH competition that same year and took first place in the Startup Wisconsin Pitch at....
