An Easy Way to Save Money in the Home
Times are tough - and they are probably going to get tougher! The pressure is on to make ends meet - more-so than ever before.  One of the most difficult things to master is managing our personal finances when money is less and demand is more. But one of the most obvious solutions is to switch from expensive consumer products to cheaper alternatives.
Items like bicarb soda, vinegar, soap, eucalyptus oil, lemons (if you have them growing in the garden) and even oatmeal are practical, cheap and versatile.  They can be used as substitutes for numerous consumer products. The advantages are many: It's cheaper, uses less chemicals and better for the environment.  What more could you ask for? So what are the alternatives?
Bicarb Soda:

Replaces:  oven cleaner, carpet/mat deodoriser, surface and bench-top cleaner, tile, basin and toilet cleaner, drain cleaner, deodorising agents,  water softener, personal deodorant, dry hair shampoo, tooth-paste, pet coat conditioners, insect repellent, garden fungal powders & more

More information: e-book No. 50 - Recycling Soap: How to transform a simple bar of soap into a array of safe, environmentally friendly products - either in the form of grated soap or soap jelly. Contains many recipes and suggestions including:  rose liquid hand soap, lemon dish-washing soap, rosemary & lavender hair shampoo, soap-based garden spray, wash-balls, heavy-duty cleansing powder, soap-bags, old English wash-balls, 'gourmet soaps' (pet soap, honey soap, etc.), beeswax polish (containing soap) and other interesting uses.  You'll be amazed at the things that can be done with a simple bar of soap - including making putty, poultice and as a drawer liner.  Price: $12.00  download information here
I've published this soap jelly recipe many times in The Shoppe newsletter. It is the most useful of all the recipes I offer. It will replace ALL your detergent based products with an easy-to-make and very cheap alternative that is also environmentally friendly:

Recipe: Economical Soap Jelly Mix:
(Transforming a bar of soap into 20 litres of washing mixture!).
Grate one bar of soap*. Put one half in one 10 litre bucket. Put the other half of grated soap in another 10 litre of water. Add ½ cup washing soda and 2 litres of boiling water to each bucket. Stir both buckets until mixture has dissolved. Top each bucket up to full with water.  Leave to cool to form a thick jelly. Approximately one cup of this mixture per wash (in the washing machine) will be sufficient for a full load of washing. It can also be used for other washing tasks in place of ‘detergents’, i.e. dish-washing, hand washing, shampoos, shower gels,  etc.
This mixture will make enough soap jelly to last some months – all from one simple bar of soap – how cheap is that?!
If you prefer a richer, soapy mix with more suds - reduce the amount of water and make one bucket using a full bar of soap.
*Any bar of soap will do - commercial, homemade, good quality (from health-food shop), cheap (generic - 5 bars to a box for only $2!), mixed soap scraps (to 100g) - it doesn't matter it can all be transformed into soap jelly.
Other items to consider:
Eucalyptus Oil: Stain removal, deodorising, disinfecting, cleaning, therapeutic, insect repellent
More information: e-book No. 51 - Uses for Eucalyptus Oil - download information here
Lemons*: Mild bleach, cleaning, deodorising, skin care, hair care, disinfectant, culinary, insect repellent, therapeutic.  *If you have a lemon tree!
More information: e-book No. 10 - The Humble Lemon - download information here
Oatmeal: Mild abrasive cleaner, skin care & cleanser, water softener, culinary, hair-care, chemical free soap alternative.
More information: e-book No. 58 - Old-time Oatmeal - down-load information here
Life’s too short to be throwing money down the drain!
Life in modern times has become complicated.  In Grandma's day just a few items were used for household tasks: soap, salt and hot water! But in our modern world there is an array of products - a separate product, in fact, for nearly every cleaning and household task. Great for the manufacturer - more money! - but not so great for the consumer pocket or purse. Buying numerous products for every specific job in the home is an expensive business - but it's not necessary.  As long as your home is clean - whether it be with the most expensive product on the supermarket shelf or with just plain old bicarb soda -  the result is the same.  But the money saved can be quite significant.
Choose what best suits you
You might not take too well to the idea of using bicarb soda as an under-arm deodorant  - for example, but rest easy as you do have a choice.  You need only use alternatives in ways that suit you - household cleaning is usually the easiest. If you have a particular phobia about how your house smells - for example - then stick to commercial deodorising agents, but instead use alternatives for other tasks in the home, Try using bicarb soda to clean the kitchen sink, bathroom basin and toilet.  It does a great job!
Old Habits Die Hard
Alternatives cost less, work as well, are good for you and the environment - the only impediment is changing old habits.  It will take a bit of extra effort to stop buying and using commercial products after years of familiar routine.  But it can be done - many people report to me after discovering new ways in my workshops they now use alternatives and saved heaps by not buying from the supermarket.
From my perspective........
I'm always astounded when standing behind someone at the supermarket and seeing a pile of cleaning products on the check-out counter.  'Who uses all this stuff?" I say to myself "when you can save heaps of money using alternatives".  I'd rather save my money for more important things than a bunch of cleaning products that pour money into the pockets of big manufacturers (most of whom are overseas). I walk into my backyard and can smell the odour of laundry detergent from my neighbours' washing hanging on their line. None of it is of natural origin - it's a specially created chemical aroma that entices the user to 'feel' clean, warm and fuzzy!  In my humble opinion there is nothing more warming than the aroma of good old fashioned soap on freshly washed laundry items!  So try using soap-jelly - count the savings - then by something really nice for yourself that's worth the money!   Pam - The Shoppe

Researchers discover that 'Connecting with Earth' is Important
We seem to have, in this modern world, overlooked the fact that we are mere creatures of Earth.  Earth is our source for survival, healing, balance and health.  Without it we would cease to exist. It is therefore very important we connect with our Earth and tap into it’s powerful energies.   In our mass-produced chemicalised society it is easy to forget who we are, where we come from (and where will return) – and what keeps us alive in-between.
A recent newspaper article reflected just that – half and hour a week in the garden does long-term good for mind and body.  Gardening (which is a form of connecting with the earth) resulted in an instant reduction in stress, fatigue – plus boosted self-esteem, vigour and feeling of good health. Green-fingered people were also less likely to be over-weight and have more energy for life. It very importantly reflects the importance of spending time – even a little – connecting with our powerful earth and it’s healing ways.
Ah – the wonders of modern research!
We should all spend more time 'connecting with the Earth'.  It doesn't take much time and can be quite enjoyable. If gardening is not your interest then there are many other ways to 'connect'.
Here’s my suggestions for ways to connect with the Earth:
1. Be 'in Nature' whenever and wherever possible.  Outdoors, trees, garden, local park, ocean, beach, etc. ALL are 'Earth connectors'.
2. Put your feet in water: ocean, river, lake, stream.
3. Go barefoot: grass, sand, earth - even the lawn!
4. Hug a tree or just sit under a tree.
5. Look at the night sky: stars, planets and the moon.
6. Enjoy a beautiful vista: hills, mountains, desert, ocean, countryside.
7. Listen to Nature:  birds, wind, trees rustling, smells of the earth
8. Appreciate animals: pets, wild-life. .
9. Watch an insect: bee, butterfly, lady-bird, bugs, ants!
10. Bring the outdoors indoors: Vase of fresh flowers, indoor plants, balcony vegetable pots, sea-shells decorations, - or just open the window and meall the fresh air!
If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy, if the simple things of nature have a message that you understand, rejoice for your soul is alive.

Rose Skin Cream
Made using the original ‘cold cream’ recipe from the 18th century which became the fore-runner for the now very powerful cosmetic industry.  This simple cream of just three ingredients (almond oil, rose-water and beeswax) is a true cosmetic cream.  It contains no added chemicals, fillers, emulsifiers, preservatives or petro-chemicals. It provides what the skin needs – a natural application - without additional chemicals and synthetic compounds.  It leaves the skin soft and subtle.  Only a small amount is required. As it is does not contain chemical emulsifiers - a small amount of water may separate from the cream. This is a normal process and will not affect the quality of the product.
Price: $4.50 (25g sample pot) or $15.00 (larger 145g jar)
How to Use:  Apply to skin after cleansing or bathing – particularly suited as a night time skin replenishment agent. Suitable for hands, face, feet, body, legs, etc.

Uses for Stale Bread
One of the most popular e-books is No. 80 - Uses for Stale Bread!  It's quite fascinating the many clever uses for stale bread. During the second World War the only thing not rationed in Britain was bread - so the British created some very clever ideas for using bread as the base for many dishes. And in the poorer areas of many countries bread was often the only staple food for feeding the family. This e-book contains an array of recipes and suggestions - some commonsense - some not!    Here's a couple of the ideas from the book:
Italian Peasant Bread Soup
Crumble stale bread into soup bowls or line the bowls with pieces of bread. Pour over hot broth, stock or light soup.  Sprinkle with grated parmesan or Romano cheese . Variations: Sprinkle with freshly chopped herbs, ground black pepper or rub the bread with a fresh garlic clove before crumbling into bowl.
Use stale bread to line pie dishes, muffins tins, etc. in place of pastry - remove crusts from bread first and cut to required shape. For a thinner, crispy pastry roll the bread with a rolling pin (works best with stale soft bread - not dry).  Stale mountain or pitta bread can also be used in place of pastry as a pie base or lid – it's healthier & cheaper!

Bread 'Cakes': Mix 8 stale bread pieces with sufficient milk to soften.  (Stand over-night to fully soak the bread).  Push mix through sieve or process to fine consistency.  Add one egg, one teaspoon sugar and sifted flour to make batter consistency. Place spoonfuls on hot pan or griddle. Cook until brown. (Serve with golden syrup and cream - yummy!).  Alternatively spoon into muffins tins or cup-cake pans and bake 15 minutes in moderate oven.

You'll discover lots more recipes and ideas for using stale bread in:

e-Booklet No. 80 - Uses for Stale Bread
