| | Make Your Own Mother's Day Gifts Why
not do something different this Mother's Day by stepping out of
consumerism and creating individually made alternatives that are light
on the purse and respectful toward the environment and mother!
Here's my quick & easy suggestions for a very different Mother's Day.....

| | Lavender Skin Cream Make a hand or general skin cream similar to commercial preparations
(at a much cheaper cost!) by using plain sorbolene cream.
 First.
purchase from the chemist a jar of plain sorbolene (one that has the
least amount of added chemicals and water - check the label).
 Add
almond oil (or grape-seed oil) to the cream and a few drops of essential
oil (such as lavender) - add a little at a time (starting with 2
teaspoons per 100ml sorbolene) - test on your skin to see if it is of
the correct oiliness and perfume for you.   Add more oil or perfume as
desired.
Nearly all commercial skin creams are sorbolene-based -
this simple homemade cream is much better because it contains less
chemicals and uses quality ingredients too expensive (and
'unprofitable') for commercial manufacturers.
 When I make my
version at home I add a tablespoon or two of infusion made from fresh
herbs from the garden to enhance the healing affect of the cream -
rosemary and calendula flowers are very good for the skin.
This cream is easy to make - can be done in a few minutes and makes an impressive gift.

| | Homemade Bath Salts: Pour your choice of bath salts (i.e. Epsom salts, rock salt or washing
soda) into a bowl. Add 3-4 drops scented oil or essential oil (i.e.
eucalyptus or lavender) and 1-2 drops food colouring. Mix well to blend.
Pour into a clean recycled jar. Label and decorate with fancy ribbon.
How to use: Add to bath for general bathing or use as a foot bath.

| | Citrus or Rose Soap-Bag (Soap is a safe, environmentally friendly alternative to detergents and body washes. Use left-over scraps for extra savings!).
 Mix together: 2
teaspoons grated soap, 1 teaspoon oatmeal, oat-bran OR wheat-germ  and
1/2 teaspoon grated citrus peel or chopped fresh rose petals. Mix well.
 Spoon
into the centre of a pretty piece of fabric or handkerchief. Tie with
matching ribbon. (Or, if handy with the sewing machine make up a small
pillow or sachet).
Use in place of soap when showering, bathing or hand-washing.

| |
| | Rose Body Powder: Obtain
a clean recycled jar (appox. 150ml in size). Pour into a clean bowl:
1/2 cup each of rice flour and cornflower. Add one teaspoon dried or
fresh rose petals (you may need to finely crush* before adding to the
powder mix). Mix the ingredients well.  Pour into jar. Apply the lid.
 * Alternatively place all ingredients in food processor and blend to a fine powder
NB: Add 3-4 drops rose or lavender essential oil for enhanced aroma if preferred.
 How to use:
After bathing or showering apply to the body with a powder puff or
cotton wool balls. May also be used as a mild underarm deodorant powder.

---------------------Why use rice flour as a talc alternative?
Talc is a mined substance that exploits the earth's resources. It also
has links to health problems such as cancer and asthma. Rice flour is
safe non-allergenic alternative - better for mum and the
whole family!
