Subject: ☟Australian Wine Tasting Thursday 5 - 7PM!

Tomorrow 5 - 7PM Join us as we explore Australia and taste a fruit forward Shiraz and a vibrant Vermentino!

Wits' End vineyard straddles the plain between the McLaren Vale and Willunga townships, it is planted with predominantly Shiraz and Chardonnay grapes and has two distinct soil types. On the southern side, the soil is a red Urrbrae loam scattered with flat-washed pebbles. This soil helps produce bright red fruit with dominant blackberry and raspberry flavours. In winter, the wet clay on the Northern side sticks to everyone and everything it touches, making the vineyard largely inaccessible and vineyard management challenging. It can drive you to your wits' end! In summer, the clay dries and shrinks, forming large and deep cracks that allow organic matter and top soil to fall in, which gives rise to another name: 'self-mulching clay'. Fruit grown in this soil is dark purple with thick skins, leading to wines with liquorice characteristics and an aroma of violets.
2016 Wits End
Vermentino
South Australia

Vermentino is an emerging varietal in Australia, and well suited to McLaren Vale's coastal position. This vintage they did a couple of small things differently by using 2 different types of yeasts to richen the texture and lift aromatics; and also undertook some lees stirring which aids with complexity and mouthfeel.
A textural wine with apple, pear and mixed citrus fruit characters. It has a crisp line of zesty acid and minerally dry finish. The wine is crazy fresh and vibrant. Organic. Great addition to a Spaghetti and seafood or chicken tacos.
2015 Chalk Hill Wits End Luna
Shiraz
South Australia

Mainly from the certified organic Wits' End vineyard, a site named for the aggravation caused by the heavy black clay, known as Gilgai, Bay of Biscay or Terra Noir, that makes the vineyard virtually inaccessible in winter. Oldest vines planted 1973. Primary ferment is finished in barrel with malolactic fully in oak. Aging for fourteen months in oak, with an additional two in tank. No fining or filtration.
The Shiraz fruit is rich, textured and perfumed. Floral notes on the nose and a freshness to the palate. Vibrant red berry fruits burst onto the palate with spicy plums. Lovely mouthfeel and texture. Chalk Hill has won numerous trophies for the Chalk Hill Luna Shiraz. Pair it with your next cheese plate!
