Welcome to the monthly edition of our Climate Change newsletter!

As you may already know, last summer Northumberland County Council declared a climate emergency. Since then we have laid out clear objectives to help tackle climate change in Northumberland.

Cutting the council's carbon emissions in half by 2025.
Making Northumberland carbon neutral by 2030.

It’s not going to be easy, and we'll need everyone to get involved and do their bit to help reduce Northumberland’s carbon emissions. That’s why we’re bringing you useful tips on a monthly basis to help reduce your carbon footprint and save money while you’re at it.

Make your home warmer for less this winter 🏡
The Green Homes Grant scheme is now live!

Did you know: energy used in our homes contributes to 31% of the county's carbon emissions - this grant can help reduce Northumberland's carbon footprint by making our homes more efficient, and save you up to £600 a year on energy bills!

The new Government grant scheme offers up to £5,000 off energy efficiency improvements on homes, including cavity wall insulation, roof insulation, double glazing, ground source heat pumps and much more.

The scheme will cover two-thirds of the costs towards improvements for homeowners and landlords, with low income households offered vouchers to cover all improvement costs under £10,000.

The scheme is open until the end of March 2021. To apply simply follow these four steps:

STEP 1: Check your eligibility using the Simple Energy Advice website

STEP 2: Check what energy efficiency or low carbon heat improvements may be suitable for your home

STEP 3: Find certified installers in your area that are able to carry out the work and get a quote on costs

STEP 4: Apply for the voucher 👉 www.gov.uk/apply-green-homes-grant

Glass recycling trial

Plans to trial glass recycling in Northumberland are being considered by the county council in a bid to improve recycling rates and help combat climate change.

The scheme will be trialled initially in four areas, with around 4,000 households receiving an additional small wheeled bin for glass bottles and jars. The trial will begin in November in Bedlington Central, Alnwick and Lesbury, Hexham East and Morpeth Stobhill, with the bins emptied every four weeks during the 12-month trial.

It is part of the council’s ongoing monitoring and review of its waste management services, with a number of improvements being considered for the future, including the option to add separate collections like this for glass and food waste, and to expand the materials residents can place in their recycling bin with the overall aim of achieving a recycling rate of above 50% and helping to combat climate change.
