Welcome to January’s edition of our Climate Change newsletter!

Happy New Year!

Since declaring a climate emergency, Northumberland County Council have laid out clear objectives to help tackle climate change in the county:

Cutting the council's carbon emissions in half by 2025.
Making Northumberland carbon neutral by 2030.

It’s not going to be easy, and we'll need everyone to get involved and do their bit to help reduce Northumberland’s carbon emissions. That’s why we’re bringing you useful tips on a monthly basis to help reduce your carbon footprint and save money while you’re at it.

Climate Change Public Q&A Event

We want to hear from you! We’re hosting a virtual public Q&A session on Wednesday 27 January, 5pm-6.30pm, with Council Leader Glen Sanderson and a panel of our climate change team. We want to tell you exactly what we’re planning to do as a local authority to tackle climate change, and we’re opening the floor to your questions.

Have you thought about setting up a community energy project?

The North East Local Enterprise Partnership want to understand how they can better support the Voluntary Community and Social Enterprise sector to tackle climate change and build more resilient communities through their combined support for community energy.

Through this consultation they want to find out about the types of community energy projects our communities are interested in and the types of support needed to make them happen. This survey should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete, depending on the detail of your answers.

Are you a climate champion?

What we’re working on…
We have revised our Climate Change Action Plan to cover the next two years in detail and to demonstrate how we can achieve our target of making Northumberland carbon neutral by 2030. We are planning on publishing this on our website early next month. Come along to our Q&A event on 27 January for a sneak preview.

We are busy installing new electric vehicle charging points in some of our car parks and the first of these is now up and running in Ponteland’s Merton Way car park. Others are in place, awaiting meter fittings so look out for them going live in the coming weeks. We will be continuing to expand our EV charging network this year so watch this space.

We enjoyed meeting many of you in the weeks before Christmas as we handed out over 7,000 free trees for you to plant in your gardens. We’re currently making plans for the leftover trees including planting them on our own land and delivering to those who are shielding. We will be reviewing the scheme over the coming months to see what improvements can be made ahead of our next giveaway this summer.
