Subject: Climate Northumberland: January update 🌳

Welcome to our first monthly Climate Change update of 2023.
What a brilliant year we had in 2022! We have been working hard to tackle carbon emissions in Northumberland and have seen some fantastic achievements which include:
  • 75 new kerbside EV chargepoints being installed
  • Over 10,000 free trees given out
  • £50,000 worth of funding awarded to community groups
  • The approval of local walking and cycling routes for three areas in the County
  • The approval of two new solar farms
  • 20 ground source heat pump projects undertaken for council buildings including in fire stations, schools and office premises
These are just some of the accomplishments we have seen over the last year on our journey to become carbon neutral by 2030, but we know there is still a lot of work to be done.

We would like to say a big thank you to our communities for all the hard work and support for helping us make this happen and we look forward to working together with you over the coming year.

Remember we want to hear your success stories too. Please email climate@northumberland.gov.uk so that we can include them in our newsletter and inspire others.

Visit our recycling plant
Ever wonder what happens to your recycling once it’s collected? Well, we’re giving you the chance to find out! We are organising free, two-hour tours for small groups to our West Sleekburn recycling plant, near Ashington where you will be able to see the entire process from beginning through to when it is ready for dispatch to re-processing plants. The tours are specifically tailored for people over the age of 16 and will run during working hours from Monday to Friday. Tours must be booked in advance. Drop us an email to climate@northumberland.gov.uk with your details and we will contact you to arrange a convenient time. Due to the use of powerful magnets within the plant and other hazards, it is inadvisable for those with pacemakers to attend.
