Free tree collection reminder
Don’t forget that free tree collections for October start next week. If you have ordered a free tree or tree pack remember to collect yours on your allocated date, time and location. We’re encouraging everyone to travel to their pickup location in the most climate conscious way possible to help keep emissions to a minimum. This could be by public transport or by bike.

The Trees
When you receive your tree sapling it will be approximately 20-60cm tall. It won’t weigh very much and should be easy to carry home, on whichever mode of transport you may be travelling.

You will receive a pack with your tree which will include:
  • A cane
  • A biodegradable guard
  • Care instructions
  • Information on how you can further help reduce your carbon footprint
  • A paper bag to carry it home with you
Please note: Free Tree saplings should only be planted on land you own unless you have an agreement with a private landowner.

Collection points will be clearly signposted.

Go green this Libraries Week
Between 2 and 8 October, Northumberland Libraries will be participating in Green Libraries Week, a national celebration organised by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) to champion the work that libraries do in their communities to support sustainability and climate change initiatives.

Local councillors become carbon literate
Carbon Literacy training has been delivered to Northumberland County Council Officers and councillors from Ashington, West Bedlington and Hexham. Carbon Literacy Training equips individuals and organisations with the knowledge and awareness needed to address the pressing issue of climate change and encourages a shift towards more sustainable practices.

County does blooming marvellous in environment awards
Northumberland has once again enjoyed stunning success in this year’s Northumbria in Bloom competition. The competition, now in its 59th year, is all about encouraging local communities to improve their area through community gardening and sound environmental practises. It is part of the UK wide Britain in Bloom campaign run by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

Cutting edge technology being used for flood warning scheme
The Next Generation Flood Resilience (NGFR) project is developing an innovative AI flood warning system to help rural communities near rivers receive flood warnings. Sensors such as rain gauges, water level and soil moisture sensors will be installed in trial catchments which will capture data in real time to feed flood models generating advanced flood warnings.

Free Walk Leader Training available in Northumberland
Northumberland residents are being invited to take part in free training to become a Walk Leader. The scheme, developed in partnership with The Ramblers - a charity dedicated to removing barriers so everyone can enjoy walking in green spaces – means that local residents can receive the training, which is suitable for people with no experience as it covers everything you need to know, including how to risk assess walking routes.
North East chosen to launch ground-breaking “compost revolution”
Enrich the Earth1 is a coalition of organisations including the National Trust, RHS and Horticultural Trade Association and is calling for a radical rethink of how we handle organic waste in the UK. It has selected the North East region to trial a “compost revolution” which will be a collective effort to turn green and food waste into a valuable material for growing. This has many benefits including reducing waste, creating better quality soil, fighting climate change and helping protect nature.

REMINDER: Launch of climate resources for Northumberland schools
We have been working in partnership with the Ministry of Eco Education to launch the ‘Climate Change and Sustainability in Northumberland: Schools Resource Pack’.

Following a rise in climate anxiety amongst young people, the ‘Climate Change and Sustainability in Northumberland: Schools Resource Pack’ has been created by the climate change team at Northumberland County Council and aims to help school staff inspire students, alleviate climate anxiety and empower them to take action locally.

The resource explores issues and solutions at a local level, investigating topics such as energy, nature, water, society and policy, transport, food and waste in Northumberland.

Within the resource, staff can expect to find Northumberland-based information, ideas for local school trips and days out, tips on how to become a carbon neutral school and discussions around some of the big questions about renewables, recycling and nature.
Climate Change and Sustainability in Northumberland: Schools Resource Pack: Launch event
A launch event is taking place where all school staff are welcome to join to find out more about what is included in the resource and how they can make the most of it within their schools.

Date: Monday 9 October
Time: 4:15pm - 5:15pm
