Return of Northumberland’s County Show
This year saw the triumphant return of Northumberland’s County Show which was held during the Queens Platinum Jubilee on Friday 3 June. Locals and tourists alike flocked to the grounds of Bywell Hall to enjoy the variety of activities and entertainment on offer and sample the wide selection of food and drink stalls serving local produce.

Our climate change team were there alongside Forestry England, who enthusiastically handed out free tree saplings to landowners, farmers and families. We brought along one of our electric vans and some sample electric vehicle charge points to demonstrate the work we are doing to increase the county’s green transport infrastructure.
Plans approved for on-street EV charge points
The team are thrilled that Cabinet members unanimously agreed on our proposed plans to install 75 on-street EV charge points across the county each year over the next three years. At a meeting on Tuesday 7 June, members approved our plans which will make EV charge points more accessible to residents who are unable to have private EV charge points installed.
What a Wonderful World festival
Our climate change team are proud to be speaking at this year’s What a Wonderful World festival taking place in Alnwick this month. The festival aims to inspire and challenge our community to take action to sustain our planet.
  • At 12noon on Saturday 25 June, our colleague Hannah Davidson will be giving a talk about waste and recycling in Northumberland at the Alnwick Playhouse Studio as part of the Talking-the-Talk session.
  • Another one of our colleagues, Chloe Munro, will be speaking about the future of sustainable farming at the Alnwick Playhouse Auditorium on Sunday 26 June as part of the Food & Farming the Future session at 1pm.
Some outstanding speakers, artists and activists will be there including Tom Heap, presenter of BBC Countryfile and author of ’39 Ways to Save the Planet’, comedian Kate Fox and Paul Smith and Duncan Lloyd from Indie band, Maximo Park will headline an amazingly wide-ranging Concert for the Planet. Young people will be out in force debating, asking questions, dancing, singing, playing music and creating amazing works of art in spray paints.

Northumberland Climate Change Fund
There is still time to apply for the Climate Change Fund which closes on Wednesday 15 June. We are offering up to £5,000 of financial support to help community and voluntary groups in the county take action on climate change. Groups can apply for grants to help with things like events, tree planting as well as installations for renewable energy. Projects must support the council's Climate Change Action Plan, be a new initiative, demonstrate longevity and show a commitment to engaging with the wider community to encourage action on climate change. Exclusions apply.
Climate Website proposal: Have your say
We are creating a website which will help you, your group or company to get involved in climate action across Northumberland. We have an idea of how we would like this website to look but we need your input. If you are an individual, business, organisation, community group or school, we would love to hear from you.
