Subject: Thankfully, we're hearing less of that question now!

But it still does come up!
Asalamu Alaykum,

Alhamdullilah Ramadan gives me this opportunity to engage with you more than in any other time during the year. I hope you don't mind all the reminders and suggestions we have been sending almost daily about Zakat.

In this email I want to briefly highlight again the need to support us as your local Zakat collectors and distributors. When we started in 2013, this was the most common question we faced, "Is there a need in Australia, isn't there Centrelink?"
So 4 years later we have dispelled that by having dealt with over 4,000 cases and our case growth is 35% per year and I expect that to go even higher.

What one needs to remember is that Centrelink assists mainly (and not enough) in one of the eight categories of Zakat recipients. Who is going to assist in the other seven? Did you know that if you or a family member dies, the mosque will not bury you if you don't pay first? Did you know your local mosque cannot house or assist you if your are left abandoned? Did you know there is no one to help you if you suddenly lost your job and will get evicted from your rental property? We deal with this every single day. Remember on day one of Ramadan, we had 4 homeless people in our office at the same time?

If you want to know more about the types of cases we assist, do read some of the cases on our website.

So I urge you to please support us this Ramadan as we head into the last part of this auspicious month. We are working hard in doing our job to ensure that on the Day of Judgment, my and your neighbour will not blame us for not helping him or her as Allah has bestowed the addressing of these requirements through the pillar of Zakat.

Ibn Taymiyyah said:
"The lesson lies in perfection of the conclusion of a thing, not in the shortcomings of the beginning of it."

With that, I encourage you all to conclude your Ramadan with Mercy; by acknowledging the need of your brothers & sisters living here in your neighbourhood; by paying your Zakat (or a portion of it) locally this year; and by ensuring that we, as a community, have not unjustly withheld the wealth of those more in need.

You can pay your Zakat online via our website or just give us a call on 1300 663 729 and we'll assist you through your payment insha Allah.

As always, if you have any questions at all - don't hesitate to reply to my email or give me a call and I'm more than happy to answer them.
