Working with addictions has taught us that they impact the community more severely and diversely than we think.

Most times, these addictions leave devastating long term impacts that need to be addressed holistically as a community with love and care.

One particularly harrowing story is that of a brother Qasim who we've been working with. Many years ago, his casual recreational drug abuse with friends turned into a 30 year addiction.

Qasim had a stable upbringing with loving parents and siblings. There were no real problems during his childhood. No one could have known that he would one day be severely addicted. But that's how addictions work, and he ended up being severely impacted and addicted.

Years of substance abuse impacted Qasim’s mental health and physical wellbeing. His finances started going towards supporting his drug addiction.

He decided he had enough of wasting his life away and wanted to change for the better. Below, we capture his journey.

When Qasim reached out to NZF, we provided him with financial assistance and helped him in getting rehab treatment for the health issues he suffered due to prolonged drug use. As part of NZF's New Beginnings program, we financially supported Qasim towards his goals for rehabilitation.

With the help of his family, Qasim has been sober for 6 months now, he lives with his brother who helps keep him on track.

There are many such stories that we come across in our work. And these are the lives we've been able to change through the power of our community's Zakat and Sadaqah.
