The annual hunger report from Foodbank in Australia reveals that over the past 12 months, 3.7 million households experienced food insecurity, marking an increase of nearly 350,000 compared to the previous year. Among these households, over 2.3 million faced 'severe food insecurity,' involving active hunger, reduced food consumption, skipped meals, or whole days without eating.
The primary driver behind food insecurity was the cost-of-living crisis, with 77% of households identifying it as the main reason, reflecting an increase from 64% in 2022. Low-income employment and inadequate welfare payments were also contributing factors, mentioned by 42% of respondents. It's noteworthy that more than half, specifically 60%, of all food-insecure households had someone in paid employment.
