Subject: I would be interested to know what option you would pick Friend

Assalamualaikum Friend

Insha Allah you are well.

We recently received a case which while unfortunate, is sadly not uncommon.

Have a read through the below summary, and tell us what you believe should be the right thing NZF does as per Zakat guidelines.

A summary

  • Maria was a revert. She had come to Australia to study, and was now working.

  • She married whom she believed was a practicing good Muslim.

  • They had a son, who was diagnosed with learning difficulties.

  • Soon after, her husband turned violent towards Maria & her son.

  • She reached out to the police, and needed to move out for her safety with her son.

  • She had to quit her job so she could look after her son. While her son was receiving Centrelink benefits, she was not eligible as she was not yet on a permanent visa.

  • She was still legally married to her husband.

Our case officer now has two options. Let us know which one you think they should pick from by clicking on the relevant option button

Option A

Assist Maria with the funds she has requested to over rental costs. Also assist with food vouchers . Continue to support her until she is able to manage on her own.

Option B

Unfortunately, since Maria is still legally married, her husband should be responsible for her welfare.

Advise Maria that she is not Zakat eligible.

I'll share the results in my next email but if you have any questions in the mean time, don't hesitate to reply to this email and ask!

Wasalam
