Giving hope to victims of domestic violence

Shazia had been living in Australia for the past couple of years on a Bridging Visa with her husband of 20 years. From an outside point of view, it looked like a loving relationship; however, behind closed doors, Shazia was enduring domestic violence. Read Shazia's story to understand how your Zakat empowered her.

So why is Fitr is $18 but Fidyah $15 ?

As promised in our previous email, here is the reason why the amounts for Zakat ul Fitr and Fidyah are different.

In consultation with our scholars, they advised that Zakat ul Fitr is based on the value of 4 handfuls of dates, barley or rice while Fidyah is the minimum cost of a reasonable meal in the country you live in. Since those paying Fidyah will usually need to do it for the entire month of Ramadan, scholars recommend that the minimum cost be taken to reduce the financial burden on those who need to pay Fidyah.

Hence the calculation methods are actually different between the two which is the reason why this year, Zakat ul Fitr has been set at $18 per person in your household, while Fidyah has been set to $15 for each day of missed fasting.

You can pay your Fitr and/or Fidyah on our website anytime. Remember, Fitr can be paid from now until just before Eid Prayer. It MUST be paid before Eid prayer so why not pay it today so you don't forget.
