Hello members of the NOWS community. We hope all are safe and healthy. As we look to the upcoming boating season, we wanted to draw your attention to an important news release provided by the United States Coast Guard regarding engine cut-off switches. The announcement states that, as of April 1, 2021, operators of recreational vessels less than 26 feet in length will be required to use an engine cut-off switch (ECOS) and associated ECOS link (ECOSL), as the U.S. Coast Guard implements a law passed by Congress. We know this new law will have implications for our community, whether you are a recreational powerboat operator or powerboat instructor. We are also pleased to note that the NOWS Subject Matter Expert Team that developed the content of the POWER Standard included the use of an engine cut off switch as one of the fundamental behaviors associated with safe entry-level powerboat operation. See page 24 of the Power Boating skills "How to” guide for more information. Finally, please read the news release. Also know that boaters are encouraged to check the U.S. Coast Guard website for additional information on this new use requirement and other safety regulations and recommendations: https://uscgboating.org/recreational-boaters/engine-cut-off-switch-faq.php. Thank you everyone. Best Regards, The NOWS Team |
