Please help maintain horse trails in Point Reyes
The budget for the National Park Service has been cut, and the trail maintenance crew for Point Reyes has been overwhelmed with issues. They would like to keep a seasonal crew to catch up on these projects, but outside funding is needed. They try their best to support trail needs. After making a request to the park service, they were able to place a picnic table at Fir Top, a welcome rest stop that serves equestrians and all trail users alike.
Many of us have enjoyed great times horse camping at Five Brooks or taking day rides from the Visitor’s Center. Several times there is a tree down or boggy section or other issue that affects our ride but the crew has not had the resources to address it quickly. This is an opportunity for us to help as Point Reyes National Seashore has significant trail and infrastructure maintenance needs.
The Mounted Patrol Foundation and Point Reyes National Seashore Association (PRNSA) have developed a goal to raise funds for this. PRNSA and the park needs to raise $106,000 this year to extend the seasonal trails crew from 3 months to 9 months — supporting trail maintenance across the park, including the equestrian trails we all rely on. We are happy to hear that PRNSA has secured a matching donation of $50,000 — meaning every gift we make will be doubled and bring us closer to helping reach that goal. We plan to gather donations from equestrian users that will be consolidated and forwarded to the Point Reyes National Seashore Association - Trails Forever fund. These funds will be dedicated to maintenance of trails that equestrians use, particularly the trails out of Horse camp and the Visitor Center parking. PRNSA will disburse the funds to NPS, to help offset the expenses of the seasonal crew. With this additional support, we hope to improve trail conditions and help ensure that these trails remain safe and accessible for equestrian use.
If you have enjoyed riding at Point Reyes and want to help improve the trails, then please help with the funding.
