Hi Friend,

One of the most common activities used to boost self esteem is to
write out and repeat positive affirmations. If you don't know
what affirmations are, here's a quick explanation:

An affirmation is a statement usually positive which helps to
reverse a negative belief or helps to support someone
trying to make positive changes in their life. An example of
this would be:

"I Express my thoughts positively."

You can read more about affirmations here:

It is often suggested that if you want to improve your self
esteem you should make a list of five or six affirmations and
repeat them daily several times. If you repeat them often enough
you can change your beliefs and behaviour so they
support you positively and help to boost your self esteem. In
many cases this really works, however, according to a new piece of
research conducted by Jennifer L. Hames of the Department of
Psychology at Florida State University, people with low self
esteem may benefit more from a different kind of activity. I'd
like to share this with you today.

The research mentioned investigated the effectiveness of
affirmations and found it doesn't always work for people with low
self esteem. So you might like to try the following activity
which was found to be more successful in the study:

First think about an activity that you really enjoy doing.
Something that really makes you feel good. Now spend 5 to 10
minutes writing about this activity. It doesn't really matter
what you write but might like to think about how you feel
when you do it and what you really enjoy about the activity.
At the end of the piece of writing note how you feel. Has it
helped to increase your self esteem?

If you have low self esteem the above activity may really work
well for you and if it does I'd love to know.

The interesting thing about this piece of research from Florida
State University is that affirmations may actually help more to
maintain a high level of self esteem. So once you feel better
about yourself affirmations would be a great activity to follow
up with to keep your level of Self-Esteem high.
