Finding Clarity in the Chaos
I took an interesting photo of the Moon. It’s playing hide-and-seek with some passing clouds. For many photographers, this is a moment of frustration—an imperfect view, a "ruined" shot. The advice says to wait for a crystal-clear night and shoot the Moon in all its glory. I beg to differ!
See the mystical glow as the moonlight cuts through the edges of the clouds? Notice the depth and mood it creates? This isn't a ruined shot. It's a different kind of beautiful, one that you can only capture when conditions aren't "perfect."
This is the perfect metaphor for starting any new passion. We have a clear goal in sight—our Moon—but it quickly gets obscured by a chorus of "shoulds" and "musts." Advice tells us we need a clear view. We also need the best gear, the right techniques, the perfect conditions before we can even begin.
We get so focused on the clouds being in the way of our perfect shot that we forget that the Moon has been there all along, waiting for us. Sometimes, the most important skill is learning to ignore the clouds and appreciate the beauty you can create right now, in this very moment. So it is with life.
Behind the Lens
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't hoping for a perfectly clear sky when I set up for this shot. When these clouds started rolling in, my first thought was to pack it in. The "rules" told me the night was a bust.
But I decided to wait and watch. As the Moon drifted between the gaps, I realized the clouds weren't ruining the view; they were adding to it. This photo was taken by breaking a fundamental "rule"—don't shoot through clouds. It's a powerful reminder that the best results often come when you trust your own eye instead of a checklist.
The Advice That's Holding You Back
This experience of finding a great shot amidst the clouds got me thinking. What other "rules" are just getting in the way? It turns out, there are a lot of them, especially for beginners in astrophotography.
I got so inspired by this question, I made a whole video to help people see through the noise. I break down the popular advice that sounds smart but is actually terrible for beginners, and I show you where to focus your efforts instead.
