Disability Awareness Sunday, August 17, 2025

Mark your calendars! Disability Awareness Sunday is an important opportunity for churches to celebrate the gifts and contributions of individuals impacted by disability, and to renew our commitment to full inclusion within the Body of Christ. This designated day encourages us to reflect on how we can better welcome, equip and empower every person.

Three simple ways to welcome individuals and families impacted by disability into your church:

1️⃣ Warmly Greet & Engage: Offer a genuine smile, make eye contact, and introduce yourself. A simple "It's great to see you today!" can go a long way.

2️⃣ Ensure Practical Comforts: Clearly mark accessible entrances and restrooms, keep aisles clear, and consider having sensory items (like fidget tools or noise-cancelling headphones) available, along with large- print materials, assistive listening devices, or accessible seating options.

3️⃣ Listen & Learn: Don't make assumptions. Ask individuals or family members if there's anything that would make their experience more enjoyable. Be open to adapting!
