THE BURQA

The burqa represents the most conservative form of Islamic dress for women based on a fundamentalist interpretation of the Koran. The Islamic dress code for women varies from country to country. As it increasingly appears in the United States we present two views of the burqa in practice elsewhere. The above photo was taken in a bazaar in Peshawar, Pakistan (1968). Below is a scene in Oran, Algeria (1943) as allied troops landed in North Africa as part of Operation Torch.
