STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL

I think that too often when we take photos of people we are concerned with creating an appealing image with smiling faces.  To a documentary photographer the concern is taking a strong image that conveys the human condition which is often not so pretty.  In general, images that show human emotions tend to remain in our consciousness longer than photos that are static.  "People of the Land"; Paris, Texas c.1906 illustrates a young family's homestead struggle in early Texas.
The struggle for survival is constant.  Some families always seem to be living on the edge.  It is the obligation of the documentary photographer to make us aware of the inequality that surrounds us.  "Hard Times in Texas" (c.1918) was taken not too long after the photo above and in the same state.  Poverty becomes more of a concern when it hits your household.
