PORTRAITS IN CONTEXT

The problem that I have with many portraits taken by photographers is that they fail to show the subject in their natural environment.  Sterile portraits leave us guessing as to what motivates the subject.  Hence, we do our best to avoid such situations.  "Stockholm Fisherman"  was taken in Stockholm, Sweden c.1960 and shows this fisherman at his favorite spot.
"Michigan Coupe" (1935) not only shows this man's attachment to this gorgeous coupe, but it further illustrates the disparity in wealth during the Great Depression.  We have made this point many times.  While 25% of the work force was unemployed, 75% were employed and seemed little affected by hard economic times.
