PLACES COLLECTION

Henri Cartier-Bresson would have called this the "decisive moment".  It is the instant when a photo just comes together.  If the location was not given for this image it would still be apparent from the evidence within.  "Hell's Kitchen" was taken in lower Manhattan in New York City c.1915.  An impressive contribution to our Places collection.
Oil wells.  Symbol of American self reliance in the past and maybe for the future only this time with hydraulic fracturing. Long before there was OPEC, the American oil, coal and steel industries powered what came to be known as the "arsenal of democracy".  Shown here, "Oil Wells" was taken in Oklahoma (1950).
