PEOPLE

George C. Tilyou, impresario extraordinaire and founder of Steeplechase Park in Coney Island, created the Blowhole Theater, and discovered that more than anything else people enjoyed watching other people and would pay for the privilege.  We believe that photos of people in their environment have a timeless quality which we have called our People collection.  "The Shoemaker" was taken in Minnesota c. 1911 at a time when people used to repair their shoes regularly as the cost of a new pair was prohibitive.
Marino Persechini, known to those who loved him as the "Hurdy Gurdy Man" (1959)  in Boston.  He entertained the public for many years.  Hey, it's a living!  I never had the pleasure to meet Marino, but I had many encounters with Raymond the "pretzel man" at City College in Manhattan and on Fordham Road in the Bronx.  A vanishing way of life to be sure.
