IMITATION IS THE SINCEREST FORM OF FLATTERY

The photo above, "Bank That Failed"; Liberal, Kansas (1936) was taken by Arthur Rothstein for the Farm Security Administration during the height of the Dust Bowl.  This bank was symbolic of the many bank failures that occurred during the Great Depression.  Rothstein was among a select group of talented photographers during this period whose work appears in the Library of Congress as a national treasure.
Rothstein's photo of the failed bank motivated us to present "First State Bank"; Optima, Oklahoma (July 20, 1934). This bank was located about 35 miles southwest of Rothstein's bank in Liberal, Kansas on Route 64 in the Oklahoma panhandle. Rothstein and his fellow Farm Security Administration photographers assembled a collection of several hundred thousand images during the Great Depression.  We contend that their collection was the finest photo essay to document life the United States ever compiled.  As extensive as their work was they could not document it all.  See more images in our 1930s collection.
