For us at DPI an iconic image is one that combines perfect composition and lighting with intrinsic significance. A photo has to have something to say. We believe that the above photo, "Amish Farmers"; Lancaster, Pennsylvania c.1920 is just such a photo. "Weighing Cotton"; Mobile, Alabama c.1931 by William F. Reekstin seen below is an iconic image more for its social significance yet it also combines fine aspects of composition and lighting.
