HOMAGE TO JOHN VACHON

John Vachon was among a group of talented photographers who documented the Great Depression for the Farm Security Administration. His work is among my favorite images from that period. I would argue that Vachon was on another level from the rest of the pack. Above is Vachon's "Unemployed Man" taken in Omaha, Nebraska (November 1938). What a difference a couple of years seemed to make for this "Man at the Pharmacy"; Washington State (c.1940). As the Great Depression was coming to a close there was renewed hope for the future. Perhaps this man was contemplating purchasing a frozen custard. Vachon's influence impacted our decision in presenting "Man at the Pharmacy". See more images from our People collection.
