THE GREAT DEPRESSION

Poverty, as seen in the faces and eyes of these children through a torn screen window. "Children in a Window" was taken in Rea, Missouri (1933).   How painful it must have been for parents to watch the suffering of their children during  hard times.

"The Migrant Camp", California (1931).  One of many camps for migrants from the Dust Bowl this mother and son were early arrivals.  The camp was affectionally called "Las Vegas, California"  by its occupants.  Some of the best known images from these camps were taken by Farm Security Administration photographer Dorothea Lange including "Migrant Mother".  The photographers of the FSA covered not only rural life but also city life and compiled several hundred thousand images.  As talented as these men and women were, and we pay tribute to their work, they could only cover a fraction of the overall suffering.
