In the above photo, "Big City Girl"; California (June 1930), the toddler and her doll are in focus while the traffic whizzes past. The background is slightly blurred thereby giving more attention to what is in the foreground, the little girl. She seems to be handling the Great Depression quite well. Below is "The Air Pump"; U. S. (August 1940). In this photo the focus is on the scene in the background, the filling station's air pump. The bicycle in the foreground is out of focus. This demonstrates the concept of selective depth of field as it depends on what the photographer wishes to call attention to in the image. See more images in our People collection.
