APPALACHIA

In many areas of the world geography tends to keep people separated from one another.  This has had disastrous effects especially on the peoples of Europe as it has led to countless wars over the centuries.  When people are cut off from one another they develop a parochial worldview as they become distrustful of "outsiders".  And so it is with Appalachia.  The people of Appalachia have become self-reliant out of necessity.  "Appalachia Family" (c.1961) illustrates strong family bonds which are the fundamental building blocks of all civilizations.
"Appalachia Folks" (c.1936) was taken at a political rally/picnic. The elephant pin in the lapel of the gentleman at the right of the photo suggests a Republican rally.
