My Million Dollar Peeps!
In the early morning hours, a great and generous man, one of the wealthiest men I know, passed away surround by an army of family and friends. I've been blessed to know him for many, many years, to be a part of his legacy, and to be with him and his family.
When young, he started as a school teacher. No advantages. No shortcuts. No silver spoon - just a man who decided he wanted and needed more to build a family and legacy that he envisioned.
In making that decision, people thought he was crazy. "Leaving a teaching job with benefits? Starting your own business is risky. What about your wife? Don't you want a family?"
While everyone else judged his decision based on money and "security," money, in fact, wasn't his goal - it was just a tool. Everyone else had it backwards. He had it right.
This great man didn’t die chasing money. He didn’t die wishing he had worked and built more. He died surrounded by a large, loving family, with a legacy most people only talk and dream about.
We all suspected his time was short which only heightened his sense of urgency to value and invest in everyone.
This past Christmas we were at his estate with literally hundreds of people, multiple generations of kids running around everywhere, yet he took me into his office and spent almost an hour speaking exclusively with me. Always willing to share wisdom and knowledge, as I look back, I think he knew that might be the last time he and I would be able to share such a valuable moment together.
I think my purposes and intent behind this message is simply to share - Don't wait!
Whatever
that business is, the goal, the dream, the vision, the plan - just
don't wait. Build it so you can share as much time with friends and
family as possible. Father Time certainly doesn't wait, so why should
you?
If today was your last day, would your life reflect that same clarity of purpose as this great man? Or, are you still dreaming of “someday?” Someday you're going to act on your plans? Someday you're going to make that change?
I know it's cliche, and we all know, tomorrow isn't guaranteed. And no, money itself doesn't matter, but it's a critical tool that helps facilitate a wonderful life and build a legacy.
Build. Love. Laugh. Appreciate.
