Hello Friend,

Did you know your military service can count toward retirement benefits under the Federal Employee Retirement System (FERS)? In many cases you can buy back your military time and earn a day for day credit for each day of active duty military service. This reduces the amount of service time required to earn a federal retirement pension.

The process is called a Military Service Credit Deposit, and it can net you other benefits, such as increased leave accrual per pay period, faster vesting of your Thrift Savings Plan agency contributions, and you may even be able to retire earlier than you otherwise might have without credit for your military service.

I recently interviewed Eddie Wills, an expert on the FERS retirement system, and recorded a podcast and wrote a detailed article discussing the process of buying back your military time and the benefits of doing so.

If you are a federal service employee or a military veteran who is considering working for the government, this is one article you don't want to miss!

Life Insurance Options for Military Members

You most likely have insurance policies on your home, vehicles, personal property, and other assets to protect yourself financially if damages or an accident were to occur. Do you have life insurance to protect your family?

If you don’t yet have a life insurance policy, now is the time to consider your options carefully and make sure that your family will be just as protected as your home or car in the event of a tragedy. A good life insurance policy can mean the difference between your loved ones struggling to make ends meet or being able to cope with your absence.

TSA PreCheck Program for Military Members and Veterans

Traveling through airport security can be a hassle. Thankfully, military members can participate in TSA PreCheck for free. The Transportation Security Agency (TSA) PreCheck passenger screening program was designed to allow certain individuals to bypass the normal security lines and go through the PreCheck security lines.

This allows them to bypass the normal security line and avoid the inconvenience of taking off your shoes, belt, and jacket. You can also leave your computer and your toiletries in your carry-on bag. This is a great program that will save you a ton of time and hassle when you travel by air!

If you are in the military, you should be eligible to participate in this program, free of charge. You may also be eligible to participate for free if you are a Wounded Warrior, or a DoD civilian employee.

Does it work? I've traveled several times in the last couple years and I've had about a 90% success rate. While it's not guaranteed every time, it does work most of the time.

Here is more information about the TSA PreCheck passenger screening program, who it applies to, and how to use it

Thank you for subscribing, and more importantly, Thank you for your service!
