Subject: These should be temporary…

Hi Friend,

The other day I was thinking about the driving forces in my life that have influenced some of my most important decisions.

I would be thrilled to tell you that the majority of my decisions have been based in love, but…

… I spent many years driven by fear.

It’s not surprising really. I grew up in an environment in which I was encouraged by family and church to be motivated by love, and if that didn’t work, then we resorted to fear.

In my young mind, fear was an acceptable motivator. So when I started having some significant life challenges and decisions to make, I resorted to fear.

I was so fearful I could create entire scenarios in my mind all based on false fears. As those scenarios piled up in my mind, and so did my fears. 

When fear is your constant companion, you are in trouble at every level—emotionally, mentally, physically, spiritually.

I could literally spin in a mental whirlwind of anxiety I created.

I discovered that if you let a fear take over, many more fears follow, until you feel overwhelmed, anxious and depressed.

Fear is not meant to be a permanent condition. It is meant to be temporary.

It is meant to safeguard you from harm—a moment of high alert until you get yourself into a safer situation.

However, if you grow up in a household where there was regular trauma, your high alert button may have been on constantly—and it might still be on, well into your adulthood.

Here are two ways you can turn fear from a permanent companion to a temporary one:



1. Attend to your fears with love.
Trying to get rid of my fears was a losing battle. They just kept coming back and in greater force. However, if I respected my fear as a survival mechanism—a way in which I was trying to protect myself from harm—I noticed the fear would soften until it disappeared.

2. Redirect your mind toward loving thoughts.
This felt like a huge feat in the beginning. My mind naturally leaned toward fear, so I seemed to be constantly needing to reframe to more loving thoughts. The only time I got some time off from this heightened attention was when I was listening to music, watching a movie or sleeping. The rest of the time, I knew if I allowed even one errant thought, I’d use it as permission to have more of them.


If you want to let go of fear as a driving force in your decisions to love being the primary motivator, it is likely to take diligence and commitment, and the good news is…

… it can be done.
