Happy April Friend!
When I was in my 20’s and early 30’s, there were long periods of time when I lived more outside of my body than in it. Like so many of us, I experienced some significant trauma as a child—so when those repressed memories were triggered as an adult, a part of me fled. That act of spiritually fleeing made it difficult for me to recognize and ask for the help I needed. I also tended to think my situation was unique, and while that wasn’t true, this belief contributed to feeling alone and helpless. And so, as I look back, I realize I struggled far more than I needed to. Fortunately, friends introduced me to women’s books, circles, courses, and spiritual gatherings, where I learned how to remain present to my body, while releasing the pain I’d been carrying. It was in these heartfelt moments, I started finding my true voice and my freedom.

One of the great traumas I needed to heal was the sexual abuse I experienced as a child. The more I healed, the better life became. And I can now say, other than when I choose to consciously enter profound spiritual space, I’m fully present in my body. It’s practically impossible to feel fully alive and enjoying life when you are not happy about being a human here on Mother Earth. Slowly, steadily, I reclaimed my soul from the sexual abuse I had experienced when I was young. And I did it by recognizing that my symptoms indicated I had experienced trauma, even though I didn’t have a memory of it until sometime after I was emotionally healed. I remember reading, Laura Davis’ book, The Courage to Heal, and noticing how many of my symptoms matched those of women who knew they had been sexually traumatized. With that awareness alone, I made a commitment to heal as though I had been traumatized—figuring it was better to do what I could to address the symptoms than to do nothing at all or try to remember something I’d clearly repressed for good reason. And I healed. | | |
Finally, I felt secure enough to claim the life I wanted, instead of trying to find meager satisfaction with a life that didn’t fulfill me. Most of all—I now realize—I didn’t give up on me! I stayed with my commitment to healing until I could genuinely feel alive and happy every day. That’s the vision I hold for every person who wants to fully heal and reclaim their lives. Years later, I received a vision about holding an online healing program for women who had been sexually abused. Thousands of women from around the world came to hear the stories of presenters who had healed through the trauma of sexual abuse. They also received hope and inspiration from internationally renowned speakers who understood what it takes to heal from trauma. Presenters included Laura Davis, Dr. Larry Dossey, Dr. Eva Detko, Dr. Pedram Shojai, Layla Martin, Debra Poneman, Arielle Ford, Kevin Hickman, and many more. In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month this April, I decided to make a few of the interviews inside our Women Emerging program available for you on my YouTube channel. We get started with Laura Davis and her personal story of recovery as she wrote The Courage to Heal—the book that I read so many years ago, and that women today still read as a source of comfort and strength in their healing. You can listen to her interview here on YouTube:
