In our continued journey this month exploring creating personal retreat time, I thought it would be helpful to consider the nature of prayer.
Many of us have been taught to think of prayer as making requests. It is certainly what I was taught.

But prayer is so much more. Prayer can actually be the state of being in which you receive.
|
|
My Native elders taught me about prayers of gratitude, which completely changed my relationship with the Divine into one of recognition and celebration of what I had received, and with less focus on what I didn’t have or what wasn’t happening yet.
They also taught me that prayers of forgiveness—forgiving ourselves and others—purifies our hearts and opens us up to receive the gifts of creation.
When I embraced meditation, I discovered silence is a prayer, because when you become still, life reveals its mysteries to you.

In stillness, you remember you ARE already, that which you hope to experience, creating a powerful state of attraction.
|
|
When I learned to become still, I began to see my entire life, and every experience as a prayer… what I call living prayer, where you are deeply attuned to what YOU are creating moment by moment. I describe this luscious experience in a prosaic-prayer I wrote and share below.
Since writing this piece, I have discovered we truly become living prayer when we maintain loving awareness in both the stillness (Sacred Feminine energy) and in action (Sacred Masculine energy). Then life is simply love and we enter the heart of the Divine.

When we live from the heart of the Divine, what manifests can easily exceed our expectations and requests.
|
|
I hope these insights offer you some new considerations as you enter into prayer in your personal time for reflection.

Living Prayer

I had been exploring the concept of living prayer, wondering what life would be like if we embraced all of our daily thoughts and actions, as well as our words, as the total sum of our prayerful expression. As I explored this, I discovered our true potential to live our heaven on earth.
I sit in the center of my beingness, Mysterious One, drinking in the nectar of the sky and breathing in the textures of the earth.
I experience the joy of each moment, preferring neither day nor night, but enjoying them both equally;
preferring neither the ways of man nor the ways of woman, but loving them both the same;
preferring neither life nor death, but appreciating the heaven that lives on both sides of the veil.
I lift up my heart in gratitude for the presence of the Divine in all living beings, in all unique appearances.

I consider choices I have made and beliefs I held that I wish I had never acted upon, letting them die quietly in my heart.
I observe the mysteries of creation and see one all-knowing eye ponder my existence with the same sense of wonder with which I observe creation.
I see the faces of my enemies as faces of myself, and I see my supporters in the same light. I hold them in the belly of my understanding, where I give birth to greater compassion.
I hear the cries of the oppressor and the one oppressed, recognizing them as the same being, struggling, longing to find the power of true freedom and fulfillment.
I open to love that lives beyond my questioning mind, my doubts and my fears.

Embracing Divinity, I become an observer of life, no longer taking every trespass personally, nor feeding my ego with any one’s approval.
Excited by the successes and happiness of others, I see their fulfillment as a reflection for all of us.
Opening my arms wide, I receive the beauty of life and bless its existence in all its wonder.
Tasting the sacred nature of my existence, I stop my busy mind long enough to know the sweetly flowered essence of the spirit housed in my bones.
The journey unwinds within me, unfolds through me, undulates all around me in a timeless pulse that exists with no end.
Feeling deeply into the silence I recognize myself as the song and pulse of ages living on forever.
