Feeling empowered in our lives is something some of us spend a lifetime trying to find.

I spent the vast majority of my younger years feeling unempowered. So I tried to find it, thinking that claiming my power had something to do with my education, career, or the strong actions I took in my life.

And to some extent, my choices did play a role in my ability to feel empowered.

But the deeper understanding of empowerment came as I allowed myself to become more vulnerable—with myself and others.

Empowerment wasn’t about what I knew or could do.

It turned out to be about admitting what I didn’t know but was committed to discovering.

One of the greatest moments of empowerment occurred during a moment in my life when, with tears streaming down my face, I made a commitment to saving myself.

Empowerment for me, was the desperate act of a woman with nowhere else to look.

I didn’t know where I was going to find the help or answers I needed, but in an act of tremendous self-love, I made a vow to heal, even if that meant having to do it all by myself.

That one moment of absolute commitment became the beginning of an amazing and profound healing journey that led me to my sacred work and the amazing people I meet today.

I believe the true nature of empowerment happens when we commit to ourselves, with a willingness to confront our greatest fears, in order to awaken to our true selves.

Empowerment, it seems, is not necessarily something you do or find, but emerges when it becomes a necessity.

Tony Robbins describes it in this way: What changes people is when your “should” becomes a “must.” When suddenly the thing that should happen, has to happen.
