"Red Shirt" Corner

Mandi Rupp is one of our spectacular Board Members and a Red Shirt volunteer extraordinaire! In 2014 she even presented a session about electricity at STEMLink. Mandi is passionate about the students that SBC programs reach and she shows up in spades to help SBC plan a vision for its future and to advocate for its reach.

"I volunteer because I had limited access to some similar programs... and it really helped to expand my outlook on what I was capable of doing and where I could go in life. My favorite SBC volunteer job is anything that lets me either witness or be a direct part in helping the kids learn and explore. Seeing the light bulb go off as the kids understand something new is reason enough to bring me back for more! In the future, I would like to see SBC able to take each and every kid that wants to go to an event. I would also like to see more inclusion of kids from school districts with historically low funding. I want everyone to know how amazingly dedicated the staff at SBC are in regards to their mission. They strive every day to pull off these events with limited funding while maximizing the number of kids that could benefit.

I volunteered at last year's STEMLink event and there was a session on using mathematics to create beautiful fractals. There was a young lady that was struggling with long division so I sat by her as we worked through equations for a couple of minutes. At the end of the day, she sought me out to give me a big hug and say thank you. I have never been a teacher so to see the impact that even a tiny amount of guidance can provide to a student was overwhelming. It makes it so evident that we need to continue to live out the mission that SBC sets forth and provide additional opportunities for teachers to educate their students."

SBC's goal is to keep costs to schools down while keeping the quality of our venues, session content, and expectation of the program high. We can't do that without your help. Your donation will help offset presenter costs, session supply costs, and keep registration fees for schools, educators, and students low.
