SBC's Creativity Festivals celebrate multiple intelligences. |
|
Students
spend the day with professionals from artistic and scientific fields to
celebrate creativity and learn that creative thinking is necessary for
everything from arctic exploration to dance and theater to survival in
outer space.
Creativity Festival for grades 5-7 takes place at the Science Museum of Minnesota on December 3, 4, 5, and 6, 2013. Registration deadline: October 18, 2013
Over 1,300 students have already registered for CF 5-7. This
year CF 5-7 sessions include: professional improv comedy training, 3-D
design in Google SketchUp, stage
acting and muscial theater, exploring the arctic with iPads and real
equipment, miming, bringing heroes and villains to life with graphic
novel illustration, step dancing, and experimenting with glues and goos
with Science Museum staff.
Creativity
Festival for grades 3 & 4 takes place at the Ted Mann Concert Hall
on the U of MN campus on January 14 & 15, 2014. Registration deadline: November 15, 2013
This
year CF 3-4 sessions include: chalk art masterpiece-making, comic book
illustration, step dancing, learning about Native American culture,
storytelling, exploring the arctic with iPads and real equipment, trying to survive in outer space, using imagination with improv, learning about aviation and flight, and becoming a chemist.

SBC's Knowledge Bowl is an interdisciplinary academic
competition that promotes academic achievement and rewards academic excellence. |
|
KB is a sport for the mind. It provides a format for student growth centered on academics. SBC coordinates the metro area Minnesota Service Cooperatives' KB program for grades 6-8 and 9-12. Students are invited to participate and join 200+ teams from across the metro in this exciting academic challenge program. Get smart.

SBC coordinates the Minnesota region of the Future City Competition.
|
|
Students in grades 6-8 spend September through January designing and building a futuristic city. Students also write a research essay and develop an oral presentation. The program culminates with the regional finals which will take place on Saturday, January 18, 2014
at the University of Minnesota. Each registered school or youth
organization may send up to 3 teams to the regional competition.

SBC's theme for this year's Young Authors Conference is Characters that POP! |
|
Join us for the 24th annual Young Author's Conference featuring keynote speaker Geoff Herbach
and hands-on breakout sessions led by published authors, illustrators,
journalists, poets, and more. Students in grades 4-8 will be
challenged to take their writing to the next level.
Winter YAC: March 20, 2014 Registration deadline: January 17, 2014
Spring YAC: May 27, 28, 29, & 30 Registration deadline: February 14, 2014

SBC welcomes Betsy Narr! Betsy joined the SBC team in mid-September and is thrilled to be a part of such an amazing group of people. Currently, she assists with every SBC program as she learns the ropes, but she will be mainly supporting the Senior High Knowledge Bowl. Betsy completed her undergraduate coursework at Augsburg College in 2009 then decided to go to Luther Seminary to complete a graduate program focusing on leadership and nonprofit support and organization. She lives in the suburbs of Minneapolis with her partner, Chris, where they watch a lot of hockey and football. |
